This is actually a really interesting case. Tldr is we have a thing called TPS since 1990. It's a humanitarian program that lets citizens of countries undergoing turmoil to come hang in America until things settle down at home. It sounds good on the face of it, but the reality is that once a country gets added to the list, it often just stays there, so these people never go home. This was not the intended purpose of the program. The Trump administration ended TPS status for all countries on the list so these folks can no longer legally stay in the US and have to go home. It goes without saying this is a huge win. For reference, 350k Haitians is 2.75% of Haiti's population. In July 2024 we had 4.3% of their population eligible for TPS. These are insane numbers. We should not be circumventing the legal immigration process by abusing a temporary humanitarian program, and we most certainly shouldn't be doing it at this scale.
