Joe Camel was banned in 1997. The FDA ruled the cartoon character was marketing cigarettes directly to children. Within a decade the campaign was gone: off shelves, off walls, out of culture entirely. What came back wasn't the cigarette. It was the culture. The vintage lighters, the diner ashtrays, posters of a cartoon camel in a tuxedo. The same aesthetic moment that brought back Chinese cigarette packs and Lucky Strike tees. The tobacco is beside the point. The iconography isn't. He got banned for making smoking look too cool. Thirty years later, that's exactly why people are collecting him.

Garry Kasparov was the best chess player who ever lived. 29 years ago today, he lost to a machine. IBM built Deep Blue to win one match and it did. Kasparov accused them of cheating and demanded a rematch. He never got one. IBM dismantled Deep Blue the same year.
