ICYMI, full report on South Korea crypto market 👇
iqGM learnerssss
South Korea’s crypto market isn’t shrinking. It’s growing up! 🚀🇰🇷
Our first research collaboration with @coingecko explores how one of crypto’s most active markets is evolving in 2026 📰
Here are some key findings:
> Trading volume on major Korean exchanges fell 21.7% from Q4 2025 to Q1 2026.
> That doesn’t appear to be a retreat. Retail speculation is cooling, while institutional infrastructure continues to expand.
> Stablecoins are becoming more important. The Stablecoin Market Cap to KRW Exchange Volume ratio increased from 2.8x to 3.6x, suggesting capital is increasingly being deployed through stablecoin rails rather than exchange trading.
> @KrwqCash, South Korea’s 1st multichain won-backed stablecoin, reached ₩1 billion in daily volume by April 2026. Much of that demand is coming from offshore institutions using it to hedge Korean market exposure 🪙🇰🇷
> Following Bithumb’s high-profile operational error in February 2026, regulators introduced stricter reconciliation, auditing, and risk-control requirements across domestic exchanges.
> South Korea is fast-tracking spot Bitcoin ETF approval while also lifting its nine-year ban on corporate crypto investment, opening the door to broader institutional participation.
> Meanwhile, the debate over who should be allowed to issue won-backed stablecoins remains unresolved, creating a race between regulation and innovation.
✅ The takeaway:
South Korea is shifting from a retail-driven crypto market toward one increasingly shaped by institutions, stablecoins, settlement infrastructure, and regulation.
