Today, Sentinel added its support to the Stop Killing the Internet campaign. The campaign was launched in response to a growing global trend toward online identity checks, age verification, device scanning, and increasing restrictions on how people access the internet. It brings together digital rights organizations from across Europe, North America, Africa, and Australia to advocate for rights-respecting alternatives that protect both safety and privacy. The principles behind the campaign reflect a challenge we've highlighted for years. The internet is becoming increasingly centralized around a handful of platforms, providers, and points of control. The Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) was first introduced in 2022, passed the US Senate in July 2024 with overwhelming bipartisan support, was reintroduced in 2025, and now forms part of the broader KIDS Act package that advanced out of the House Energy and Commerce Committee in March 2026. It has not yet become law. Sound familiar? The UK has its Online Safety Act. Australia has introduced age verification measures. France, Spain, and other countries are exploring similar proposals. While the legislation differs, the direction is increasingly the same: greater identity and age verification before accessing parts of the internet. The goal is to improve child safety online. The debate is about how that should be achieved. As governments increasingly explore identity-based access to online services, the underlying architecture becomes just as important as the policy itself. Centralized verification systems can create attractive targets for data breaches, subpoenas, and misuse because they concentrate sensitive information in one place.
