When things break, especially infra costs are pretty damn high they're done rushed, under cost pressure, half-assed by whoever's cheapest. also, a botched repair can't be undone. The golden-age pieces that still run kept running for one reason: someone serviced them on a schedule, so the catastrophic fix never came due. modern infrastructure is that watch at ...scale! We run bridges, pipes, road to the ground waiting for the break. the 2024 Utah State study, which is very thorough here, finds the US replaces water pipes on a roughly 200-year cycle. those pipes are built to last 75 to 100...yikes So many mains run to failure, they then get patched fast and cheap by a crew that shows up after the street is already flooded. A burst somewhere in the country every couple of minutes. We're over-polishing the case, nationwide (i chukled on this pout loud) There's a second rule the watch world lives by, and we break it too. The people who built the thing stay close to maintaining it, so the knowledge of how to manage its wear survives and compounds. The lineage is losing track... if you let the machinists and engineers who laid the original mains age out with no one trained behind them, you will lose the asset and the ability to keep it alive. Then the only move left is to build it again from the ground up. Expensive, and often crappy. We should manage wear, and to do that, we need to manage the pipe and the people who know the pipe. If we neglect maintenance, we'll pay for both twice: once to rebuild and once to relearn how. Watchmaker pieces still run because they were maintained by people who knew them before anything ever broke. We should get back to practicing those things we can't live without.
