Buddha’s Birthday talk as abbot: upon the sacred truth that because I exist, in turn - you exist and because you exist, I too exist: we learn to let go of the Three Poisons: greed, anger, and ignorance, and instead cultivate compassion and wisdom. Looking at the lotus lanterns lovingly hung across these sacred grounds today, they are not just tiny flames flickering in the wind. They are the burning light of our earnest vow to dispel the darkness and resentment lurking within our hearts. When we calm the rough waves inside ourselves and attain peace of mind, the very place where we stand becomes a fragrant Pure Land. On this sacred day of the Buddha’s birth, I hope we may also light the lotus lanterns within our own hearts, so that their warmth may extend beyond ourselves and illuminate the world around us. May you all attain enlightenment. 🙏
